Medieval Word Association

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Today’s challenge is to complete this Medieval Word Association. Look at each word and write down the first word that it makes pop into your mind. Then post your list as a comment. Whoever’s answer list just happens to be closest to mine wins… absolutely nothing except the knowledge that they are as strange and peculiar as I am. :-D

Here is an example of how to post your should look.

Red = Cherry
Blue = Berry
Yellow = Banana

So here goes!

commentbox.jpg

Monday Memories has been preempted to bring you this contest announcement. Whoever convinces the most people to leave comments on the SCAlife.com blog will win an out-of-print issue of Tournaments Illuminated, the Society for Creative Anachronism’s equivalent of Life Magazine.

The Rules:

1) You may leave comments yourself.
2) You may have other people leave comments on your behalf, but they must specifically mention that they are commenting because you referred them.
3) All comments must be of a substantive nature, not just, “I’m commenting! Hee hee!”
4) The contest will run from 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 18 to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 24.
5) SCAlife will be the postage to mail the issue of Tournaments Illuminated.
6) Any questions should be directed to Catslyn via the “contact me” link.

Good Luck!

Chivalry is the Key

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Okay, today is the day that I present the song chosen by the winner of the “Riddle Me This” contest. This is not a good thing. It’s just not.

Some facts you should know:

1) This song has never be shared in public let alone sung for an audience.
2) No one even remembers the original song that it’s a filk of.
3) It sucks — and I wrote it.
4) It really sucks. It isn’t catchy. The wording is awkward. And it’s saccharin, sentimental slop.

But Cloudy chose it. God help us. Here it is.

Chivalry is the Key
(tune: Good as I Was to You)
by
Zeva the Weaver
a.k.a. Catslyn

She walked into the feast hall
Where they were to dine
But the candle glowing darkness
Couldn’t ease her heart this time
She sat down at a table
Her tears fell silently
And into her trembling hands
She whispered quietly

He meant the world to me
Bad times, we had a few
And yet I thought there’d be
Some good ones coming too
And now I must let go
But how was I to know
It would hurt so desperately
Oh I know he’s gone
Tell me how I can go on
He meant the world to me

Someone sat down beside her
And gently held her close
He wiped away her teardrops
And he offered her a rose
He said I know not why you’re crying
But I recognize despair
And if you don’t me say’n
You can find some comfort here

We will be good to you
The SCA’s a home
A family of friends
Wherever you may roam
The problems of the world
Can’t be solved by just some Earl
But I’ll try to help you through
Oh I know you hurt
But give our world a chance
And it’ll be good to you

She looked into the kind face
Of a man she did not know
And she could not understand why
Such compassion he would show
For a stranger he’d just met
Oh, but then she understood
And she never will forget
For it did her heart great good

Chivalry is the key
To this strange’n lovely world
The simple choice to care
For every boy and girl
They go out of their way
To help those in dismay
It comes so naturally
In the SCA
They found a better way
Chivalry is the key

In the SCA
They found a better way
Chivalry is the key

We Have a Winner!!!

And the winner of the riddle contest is…Cloudy!

Riddle
My house is not quiet, I am not loud;
But for us God fashioned our fate together.
I am the swifter, at times the stronger,
My house more enduring, longer to last.

Should we two be severed, my death is sure.

Riddle Me This!

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

I give you a medieval riddle. You have until Friday at midnight PST to give me the answer. The first person with the correct answer gets to choose which of my SCA filk songs will be posted on Saturday. Finally, anyone who has a medieval riddle they’d like me to use in the future, or a song they’d like to share, please contact me.

Taken from The Book of Exeter
Translated by Kevin Crossley-Holland

My house more enduring, longer to last.
A times I rest; my dwelling still runs;

The Filk of the Week is… Pennsic War

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Pennsic War
by Zeva the Weaver, aka: Catslyn
(tune: Jingle Bells)

Trudging through the grass, through trees and shrubs galore
If I don’t find some fights, I will miss the war
I have gotten lost, lost as I could be
I think this is the third time I’ve seen the same darn tree

Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s no prize
Why would anyone want to fight at an event this size
Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s no prize
Why would anyone want to fight at an event this size

Hundreds of fighters here, and I can’t find a one
For all that I know, East’s already won
But what is that I see, upon a hill ahead
It looks just like the Eastern Flag, and all the guards are dead

Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s okay
If I catch the flag, oh I might just save the day
Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s okay
If I catch the flag, oh I might just save the day

The Eastern soldiers groan, as I come in sight
They won’t try’n stop me, it would not be right
Soldiers from the middle cheer as I depart
With the Eastern flag in hand I’m feeling light of heart

Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s the best
Who’d have thought that I would be crazy as the rest
Pennsic War, Pennsic War, Pennsic War’s the best
Who’d have thought that I would be crazy as the rest

Wednesday Wordplay — Let’s Filk Baby!

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

lute.jpg

Once upon a time, I was a bard in the SCA known as Zeva the Weaver. I specialized in filks, and my most popular songs were always the funny ones. And here’s the kicker — I still have many of those old songs.

So, every Wednesday, I’m willing to share one song. However, first you must vote on which song you want to see. Previously unposted songs, some comic, some not, will be listed and up for the vote. You may vote by leaving a comment stating the song of your choice.

I must receive a minimum of 5 votes (it doesn’t matter if they’re all for the same song) or no filk will be posted.

You have until Wednesday at midnight (PST) to leave your votes. The filk will be posted on Thursday morning, immediately followed by my standard Thursday post, “R is for Reasearch.” See you all at the polls. ;-)
